There are few technologies that have had a more successful introduction into our vehicles than start-stop systems: and this is emphasised by new sales figures from Johnson Controls, Inc.
The company has sold in excess of 18million Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries which are typically used in the start-stop systems. Indeed 4.5million were sold annually in Europe where the technology has been particularly successful.
According to a recent report, more than 70 per cent of new cars are expected to include start-stop technology by 2017: and the global market for the systems will reach 35million by that time.
There has been real satisfaction with the technology among owners too: with research recently commissioned by Johnson Controls highlighting that 90 per cent of start-stop vehicle owners in Europe would buy a vehicle with the technology again.
The AGM batteries, meanwhile, have been a crucial part of the success story. They contain a glass mat separator that maintains the electrolyte around the positive plate; they include tight-fitting construction that offers high pressure on the plate in the battery to reduce vibration; and the sealed, valve regulated nature of the battery ensures it delivers extreme cycle life and high energy levels.
