Chrysler no longer plans to build a Maserati SUV called the Levante at its plant in Detroit as demand for the Jeep Grand Cherokee soars.
“Due to the high demand for the Grand Cherokee we reallocated the product to Italy,†Maserati CEO Harald Wester said in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The Levante is one of three models that Maserati is counting on as it aims to grow global sales from 6,300 in 2012 to 50,000 by 2015.
The SUV will be built from the same architecture as the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
In 2012, when Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne unveiled a concept version of a Maserati SUV at the Detroit auto show he said the vehicle would be built at the company’s plant in Detroit and applauded the workforce there for being capable of building a luxury SUV.
But as demand has increased globally for the Grand Cherokee and as Fiat has confronted a recession in Europe, Marchionne decided to produce the vehicle in Europe so the company would not need to close its factory in Mirafiori.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Chinese telecommunications company Huawei said on Monday it had not worked with an institute in Singapore on any projects in the specialist field of an American engineer who died mysteriously last year shortly after leaving the institute.
Britain's Financial Times said on Saturday that Shane Todd had been working on "what was apparently a joint project" between Singapore's Institute of Microelectronics, or IME, and Huawei shortly before he died last June.
His parents have said he was murdered because of his involvement in the project, which they say involved exporting sensitive military technology to China.
IME declined immediate comment.
Singapore police said they were still investigating the death of Todd, 31, and would submit their evidence to a coroner. Singaporean pathologists concluded in an autopsy last June that he died by hanging in his Singapore flat.
"IME approached Huawei on one occasion to cooperate with them in the GaN field, but we decided not to accept, and consequently do not have any cooperation with IME related to GaN," Huawei said in a statement.
Todd's area of expertise was Gallium Nitride (GaN), an advanced semiconductor material which has both commercial and military purposes. It is used in things from blue-ray disc players to military radars.
Huawei said that the development of GaN technology was commonplace across the telecommunications industry.
Reuters reviewed evidence the family presented supporting its theory a few weeks after his death, including emails, other documents and photographs.
Interviews with the family, colleagues and friends revealed conflicting views on Todd's state of mind before his death, the nature of his work and how he died.
Colleagues said that he was increasingly depressed in his last few months, but said that his concerns appeared to centre on a sense of failure about his work, and an ambivalence about returning to the United States.
Researchers in unrelated fields have also questioned how, if his work was so sensitive, he was able to take home computer files from his office. His family retrieved a hard drive which included work files in his flat.
IME is part of a network of research institutes managed by government-run Agency for Science, Technology and Research, or A*Star.
A former A*Star researcher now working in the United States pointed out that IME and other A*Star institutes were not military research organizations.

At the heart of the family's theory is that Todd was concerned for his safety because of a project with a Chinese company. They believed, through information from his colleagues and from his computer files, that the company was Huawei.
Reuters can't independently corroborate their views about the role of Huawei or the circumstances of Todd's death.
Huawei is one of the world's largest telecommunication equipment companies, but has been blocked from some projects in Australia and deemed a security risk by the U.S. congress on the grounds that its equipment could be used for spying.
Huawei has routinely denied such accusations and has said it is not linked to the Chinese government.
Todd's parents said in interviews in July that Singapore police and IME had failed to properly investigate his death after his body was found hanging from a door in his Singapore apartment on the evening of June 24, two days after he quit IME.
Singapore police say they have handled the case as they have handled other cases, and their procedures follow high international standards. They said in such cases of unnatural death, "no prior assumptions" were made about the cause.
The parents did not immediately respond to emails requesting comment on the Financial Times report but Todd's mother, Mary, said in a telephone interview with Reuters last July that he had been scared.
"I had been talking to him for months for at least an hour every week and he told us he was afraid of being murdered because of his contacts with the Chinese government," she said.
"He quit his job because of it."
Huawei declined to say whether they had been working on other projects with IME. Colleagues said shortly after Todd's death that he had told them at one point he had been working on a project with Huawei but that it was not sensitive or high-level in nature.
One described it as carrying out "measurement test reports" of semiconductors.
The Financial Times said that Todd had been involved in proposing a joint project with Huawei. While it did not say whether the project was approved, it quoted his parents as saying that subsequently he complained to them of being asked to do things with a Chinese company he did not identify that made him uncomfortable.

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Intel's Israeli subsidiary more than doubled its exports in 2012 to $ 4.6 billion and is seeking to bring manufacturing of the company's next generation of chips to Israel.
Intel's exports, which rose 109 percent from $ 2.2 billion in 2011, were boosted by the start of production of chips using 22 nanometer technology at its Kiryat Gat plant in southern Israel, which is now operating at full capacity.
Intel, the world's No. 1 chipmaker, will build chips over the next two to three years with features measuring just 14 nm in Ireland and the United States but the company is already thinking about where it will produce 10 nm chips. The narrower the features, the more transistors can fit on a single chip, improving performance.
Intel Israel executives said they would like to see 10 nm production in Israel.
"The average life of a technology is two to six years so we need to be busy to get the next technology, 10 nanometer," Maxine Fassberg, general manager of Intel Israel, told a news conference on Sunday. "We need to get a decision far enough in advance to be able to upgrade the plant. So for 10 nanometer, decisions will need to be made this year."
Fassberg said upgrading the existing Fab 28 plant in Israel would require a lower investment than building a new plant but would still involve several billion dollars.
Intel Israel has in the past received government grants to help with the costs of its investments and Fassberg told Reuters the company was "constantly in talks with the government".
Intel has invested $ 10.5 billion in Israel in the past decade, including $ 1.1 billion in 2012, and has received $ 1.3 billion in government grants.
The company accounted for 20 percent of Israel's high-tech exports last year and 10 percent of its industrial exports, excluding diamonds.
"If Intel had not increased its exports, Israel's high-tech exports would have shrunk by 10 percent," Intel Israel President Mooly Eden said.
Most of Intel Israel's exports - $ 3.5 billion - came from its chip manufacturing activities.
Intel is Israel's largest private employer, with 8,542 workers, up 10 percent from 2011. The company has two plants - in Jerusalem and Kiryat Gat - as well as four research and development centers.
Eden said Intel was also committed to investing in start-ups, having invested in 64 Israeli companies since 1996. In July its global investment arm Intel Capital said it would expand its operations in Israel.

Chrysler broke with past practice when it introduced the latest snake with a hardtop. Past generations started with the convertible, followed by a coupe.
The fifth-generation Viper was developed for both body styles, but because the car will compete in the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race in France in June, the automaker had to get the coupe on the road first.
As for timing of the convertible, the company's revised five-year product plan showed the ultra-performance car being refreshed in 2015.
It's not a refresh, said Ralph Gilles, head of the SRT brand. "It's a model addition," he said.
Gilles smiled when asked to confirm that the model is the convertible -- executives are not allowed to talk about future product. He then hedged by calling it a "placeholder for an additional version of the car" and a "potentially interesting derivative."
The all-new 2013 Viper, with a 640-horsepower 8.4-liter V10, is an image car that also serves as a symbol of Chrysler's recovery.
The first allocation of 800 Vipers are spoken for, and Chrysler will ship those soon. Chrysler will take orders for another 500 to 700 in a few months. Workers at the Conner Avenue plant are building 12 vehicles a day. Chrysler hopes they can keep up if demand grows.
The SRT team is excited about returning to Le Mans.
"It puts us on a world stage," Gilles said. "Everyone inside the SRT brand and the marketing team is very humbled and honored and excited."
Chrysler has not competed in the endurance event for the last 14 years.
"The brand is kind of in a rebirth so it's perfect timing," Gilles said. "We picked the right place to come back and the right time."
The Viper "is really a race car in disguise," he said. Successful winter testing and the comfort level of the six drivers, all with different styles, provides confidence the car will fare well against such competitors as Porsche and Aston Martin.
As for the future of the performance brand, another SRT will be added in 2016, according to the five-year plan.
Gilles declined to talk about it or speculation that the compact Dodge Dart will get an SRT package. Past compact cars -- the Dodge Neon and Caliber -- had SRT4 versions.
There are already SRT versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300. Last week, Chrysler showed SRT8 derivatives of its 300, Dodge Charger and Challenger at the Chicago Auto Show.

BMW recalls nearly 570,000 cars to fix cables
BMW is recalling almost 570,000 cars in the U.S. and Canada because a battery cable connector can fail and cause the engines to stall.
The recall affects popular 3-Series sedans, wagons, convertibles and coupes from the 2007 through 2011 model years. Also included are 1-Series coupes and convertibles from 2008 through 2012, and the Z4 sports car from 2009 through 2011.
The cable connectors and a fuse box terminal in the cars can degrade over time, and that can break the electrical connection between the trunk-mounted battery and the fuse box at the front. If that happens, the cars could lose electrical power, causing the engines to stall unexpectedly, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in documents posted on its website Saturday.
The company says in documents sent to NHTSA that the problem stems from movement between the battery cable and the fuse box.
BMW says it knows of one minor collision in Canada due to the problem, but no injuries.
The German automaker says dealers will replace the battery cable connector and secure it for free. It will start notifying owners in March.
The 3-Series is BMW's most popular car in the U.S., dominating the small luxury car market. The company sold nearly 100,000 of them in the U.S. last year.
The recall affects more than 504,000 cars in the U.S. and another 65,000 in Canada.
BMW, Toyota and other automakers have experienced large recalls in recent years because they use common parts on multiple models in order to save money.

Factory output falls on weak auto production
WASHINGTON â€" Factories slowed production in January after two solid months of cranking out goods, the Federal Reserve reported today.
The weakness reflected a big drop in output at auto factories that is likely temporary.
Manufacturing output fell 0.4% in January from December, the Fed said today. The decline followed increases of 1.1% in December and 1.7% in November.
Overall industrial production edged down 0.1% in January compared with December. Output In mining, the category that covers oil and gas drilling, fell 1%. Utility output jumped 3.5%, as a cold snap led more households to turn up their heat.
Factory output, the most important component of industrial production, was dragged lower by a steep 3.2% decline in auto and auto parts production. The auto industry is coming off its best year for sales in five years, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak manufacturing sector. Sales continue to rise, so production will likely rebound in February.
Still, many factories outside the auto industry have been hurt by a slowdown in consumer spending and weaker global growth that has dampened demand for U.S. exports.
Economists expect healthier output in 2013, partly because U.S. companies are sitting on large amounts of cash and appear poised to invest some of it in equipment and machinery. Economies in Europe are also healing, and growth in Asia is expected to improve.
A closely watched survey of U.S. manufacturing conditions showed the year got off to a good start. Manufacturing activity grew last month at the fastest pace since April, according to the Institute for Supply Management. Factories saw growth in new orders, hired more workers and boosted their stockpiles after two months of declines, the survey said.
Slower growth in stockpiles was a key reason the economy shrank at an annual rate of 0.1% in the October-December quarter, first contraction in 3½ years. Deep cuts in defense spending and fewer exports also contributed to the decline.
Still, economists expect that figure will be revised in the coming months to show a small increase. That's because December trade data, which wasn't available when the government calculated its first estimate for fourth-quarter growth, showed solid growth in exports.
Economists at Barclays Capital estimate the economy expanded at a 0.5% annual rate in the fourth quarter. And growth will likely pick up in the January-March quarter to an annual rate of 1.5%, analysts forecast.
A better job market could boost consumer spending, leading to faster U.S. growth. Employers added 157,000 jobs in January and an average of 200,000 jobs a month since November. U.S. factories have added jobs the past four months.
Still, unemployment remains high at 7.9%. And Americans are seeing smaller paychecks this year because of an increase in Social Security taxes, which could offset any benefits from stronger hiring.

General Motors remains confident it can shrink continuing losses in Europe that diluted a strong performance in North America and Asia, as the company banks on a stronger flow of new products later this year.
The automaker's pretax loss in Europe grew by 24% in the fourth quarter from a year earlier to $ 699 million. Its yearly loss in Europe, where GM wants to break even by mid-decade, more than doubled to $ 1.8 billion.
GM Chief Financial Officer Daniel Ammann said the company still expects to slightly improve its performance in Europe in 2013 despite a weakening outlook for the industry.
"What happens beyond that is going to be a function of how the European economy develops," Ammann said.
On a global basis, GM's 2012 operating profit slipped 5% to $ 7.9 billion.
For the final three months of 2012, operating profit, which excludes special accounting items, rose 14% to $ 1.25 billion for the fourth quarter.
Investors weren't thrilled, partly because of the European loss, and GM shares fell 92 cents, or 3.2% to $ 27.75, their lowest closing price since Dec. 26.
But most of the profit is coming from the U.S., Canada and Mexico, where pre-tax operating profits were $ 1.4 billion in the fourth quarter and $ 6.95 billion for the full year.
The company announced that it will issue profit-sharing checks of up to $ 6,750 to its 49,000 hourly U.S. workers.
"From every vantage point, 2012 was another solid year for General Motors," CEO Dan Akerson said in a conference call. "We planted the seeds of growth in every region around the world."
The world's second-biggest automaker will soon begin selling redesigned versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups and the Chevrolet Impala sedan. The Buick Encore compact crossover recently hit the market and a redesigned Cadillac CTS will be released this fall. The redesigned Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will hit showrooms in the third quarter, although it won't be sold in high volumes.
GM's net income in 2012 fell 36% to $ 4.9 billion from a year earlier, although it would have been about $ 500 million higher if unusual taxation and other accounting changes were excluded.
"An entrenched GM investor may see no need to sell, while a prospective investor may see no need to rush in," Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said in a research note.
Akerson said GM will accelerate the launch of new models.
"Between 2013 and 2016 we will refresh our North American portfolio at twice the rate we did the last three years," Akerson said.
He also confirmed that GM probably won't appoint a new global chief marketing officer, choosing instead to rely on individual global brand marketing chiefs.
GM's revenue rose 3% for the quarter to $ 39.3 billion and 1% for the year to $ 152.3 billion.
In the automaker's international operations, which include the critical Chinese market, pre-tax income rose 27% for the quarter to $ 473 million and 15% for the year to $ 2.2 billion.
GM's U.S. market share fell from 19.2% in 2011 to 17.5% in 2012. It slipped in the fourth quarter to 17.1% from 18% a year earlier.
"We have a really strong year of product introductions around the world in 2013," Ammann said.
Barclays analyst Brian Johnson said GM won't reap the full benefits of the new products until next year.
"We maintain our view that '14 is the sweet spot for GM, as we expect GM to benefit from multiple product improvements," Johnson said in a research note.
GM added 3,000 U.S. employees from the end of 2011 to the end of 2012 for a total of 80,000. GM had 213,000 employees worldwide at the end of 2012, up from 207,000 a year earlier.
As GM seeks to reduce its pension obligations, the company will consider changes to its retiree payment structure, possibly including lump-sum payments to UAW retirees, executives said. In 2012, GM offered pension buyouts to its U.S. salaried retirees. There have been conversations with the UAW about making a similar offer to hourly retirees.
"We will still act if something interesting comes along," Ammann said.
GM had several unusual items in the fourth quarter of 2012, but the net effect was a boost in net income by about $ 100 million.

BOSTON (Reuters) - Some of the biggest hedge funds that helped make Apple Inc a stock market darling lost faith and dumped their stakes in the fourth quarter, fueling the massive drop in the iPhone maker's share price.
Noted stock pickers including Leon Cooperman and Thomas Steyer unloaded billions of dollars of Apple shares between September 30 and December 31, according to disclosure documents filed on Thursday.
Shares of Apple rose to an all-time high of $ 705.07 on September 21 but ended 2012 down more than 24 percent from that peak, as concerns about increasing competition and declining profit margins weighed.
The fourth-quarter sellers avoided even deeper losses. Apple's shares have lost 12 percent so far this year. The shares gained $ 1.95, or 0.4 percent, to $ 468.96 on the Nasdaq on Thursday.
Cooperman's Omega Advisors fund dumped its entire stake of more than 266,000 shares during the fourth quarter, according to its required quarterly disclosure form filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Farallon Capital, the hedge fund founded by Steyer, sold 137,000 shares. Steyer, who once worked on the Goldman Sachs risk arbitrage desk, stepped down at the end of the year from the firm, which he founded in 1986.
Jana Partners, an activist fund run by Barry Rosenstein, also unloaded its entire Apple stake of more than 143,000 shares.
Despite Apple's stock price plunge, most of the managers likely exited their positions with substantial profits because they bought years earlier.
Rosenstein and Cooperman, for example, both started gathering their stakes in the middle 2010, at a time when Apple shares traded below $ 300.
At the time, the company's iPhone 4 was beset by alleged faulty reception, a problem that became known as "antennagate." Apple's then-chief executive, the late Steve Jobs, famously dismissed the issue, saying "we don't think we have a problem." But Apple offered customers a free bumper case that was supposed to minimize any issues.
Customers did not seem to care, snapping up millions of iPhones and sending Apple's share price up almost 50 percent over the next year.
Apple has come under further scrutiny, this time from prominent hedge fund manager David Einhorn, who said on February 7 that he was suing the company to get it to deploy its $ 137 billion cash pile more effectively and halt a 35 percent drop in its share price from the record high in September. Einhorn's fund, Greenlight Capital, has a stake in the company worth about $ 600 million. Greenlight's regulatory filings are to be released later today.
SOME TRIMMED
Not all well-known hedge fund fans of Apple cut ties in the fourth quarter. Some only trimmed their holdings.
Philippe Laffont, who worked under famed hedge fund manager Julian Robertson before striking out on his own at Coatue Management, sold about 18 percent of his Apple shares. Coatue ended the year with a still sizable 643,000 shares.
And Chase Coleman, another Robertson protege, trimmed Apple holdings at his Tiger Management LLC fund by 28 percent to about 42,000 shares.
Large hedge funds are required to disclose their U.S. stock holdings within 45 days after the end of each quarter.
But the filings may not give a complete picture of each fund's moves, since only U.S.-listed shares and options must be revealed. Bonds, foreign shares and derivatives are not included, and short positions, or bets that a stock will fall in price, are not listed.

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp has not made much of a dent in Apple Inc's and Google Inc's domination of mobile computing, but a top executive hinted on Wednesday that it will not stop trying and does not have an alternative strategy.
"We're very focused on continuing the success we have with PCs and taking that to tablets and phones," Microsoft's Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein said at the annual Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco, which was webcast.
Given Microsoft's lack of success so far, he was asked if there was an alternative strategy or 'Plan B' in reserve.
"It's less 'Plan B' than how you execute on the current plan," said Klein. "We aim to evolve this generation of Windows to make sure we have the right set of experiences at the right price points for all customers."
Microsoft now has two versions of its own brand Surface tablet for sale and released its newest Windows phone software last year. But the company has not made big inroads into either market.
Gartner estimates that Microsoft sold fewer than 900,000 Surface tablets in the fourth quarter, which is a fraction of the 23 million iPads sold by Apple. Microsoft has not released its own figures but has not disputed Gartner's.
Windows phones now account for 3 percent of the global smartphone market, Gartner says, which is almost double their share a year ago but way behind Google's Android with 70 percent and Apple with 21 percent.
To grab more share, Klein said Microsoft was working with hardware makers to make sure Windows software is available on devices ranging from phones to tablets to larger all-in-one PCs.
"It's probably more nuanced than just you lower prices or raise prices," said Klein. "It's less a Plan B and more, how do you tweak your plan, how do you bring these things to market to make sure you have the right offerings at the right price points?"
Klein did not say whether Microsoft itself was planning to move into the growing small tablet market, following the success of Apple's iPad mini, Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon.com Inc's Kindle Fire tablet.
Along with its partners, Klein said only that Microsoft was "well set-up to deliver the most versatile set of experiences across form factors".
Regarding Microsoft's $ 2 billion loan to Michael Dell and private equity firm Silver Lake to take PC maker Dell Inc private, announced last week, Klein suggested it was simply part of its efforts to support the "ecosystem" of PC makers.
"We have a long history of participating and supporting the ecosystem and that takes different forms. Oftentimes it takes the form of co-marketing, sometimes in helping with development," said Klein. "In a very dynamic industry, our ability to support the ecosystem - particularly the ecosystem that is innovating on our devices and platforms - is a good thing and something we will continue to do."

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc Chief Executive Marissa Mayer said the company's search partnership with Microsoft Corp was not delivering the market share gains or the revenue boost that it should.
"One of the points of the alliance is that we collectively want to grow share rather than just trading share with each other," Mayer said at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco on Tuesday.
In her first appearance at an investor conference since taking the reins of the struggling Web portal in July, Mayer said she planned to prune a sprawling lineup of mobile apps and she reiterated her focus on enticing consumers to spend more time on Yahoo's online properties, in order to display more money-making ads.
"I'm not confused. Our biggest business problem right now is impressions. Basically can we grow impressions, can we get growth happening here," Mayer said.
Yahoo shares finished Tuesday's regular trading session up 31 cents at $ 21.21.
Mayer, 37, took over after a tumultuous period at Yahoo in which former CEO Scott Thompson resigned after less than 6 months on the job over a controversy about his academic credentials and in which Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang resigned from the board and cut his ties with the company.
Yahoo's revenue in 2012 was flat year-over-year, at roughly $ 5 billion, and down from roughly $ 6.3 billion in 2010.
"We need to see monetization working better because we know that it can and we've seen other competitors in the space illustrate how well it can work," Mayer said of the search deal with Microsoft.
Yahoo and Microsoft entered into a 10-year search partnership in 2010, hoping their combined efforts could mount a more competitive challenge to Google Inc, the world's No.1 search engine. But the partnership has not lived up to expectations.
Google remains the dominant search engine, with a 66.7 percent share of the U.S. market in December, almost unchanged from its 66.6 percent share two years earlier, according to online analytics firm comScore.
Microsoft had 16.3 percent share and Yahoo had 12.2 percent share in December, a reversal of two years earlier when Yahoo's U.S. search share was 16 percent and Microsoft had 12 percent share.
Yahoo's stock has risen more than 30 percent since Mayer took the helm in July, reaching its highest levels since 2008.
Analysts say that part of the stock's rise has been driven by significant stock buybacks, using proceeds from a $ 7.6 billion deal to sell half of its 40 percent stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba Group.
Mayer said that she viewed the company's relationship with Yahoo Japan, which is partly owned by Softbank, as "strategic" to the company. Under previous CEOs, Yahoo had engaged in unsuccessful discussions to "monetize" its roughly 35 percent stake in Yahoo Japan.

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Mobile phone maker Nokia expanded its line of low-end smartphones on Tuesday with the Asha 310, which comes with dual-SIM and wi-fi access, aiming to bolster its market share in developing markets.
Nokia has been losing market share to Samsung and Apple in the high-end smartphone market and is also struggling at the low end against growing competition from Chinese manufacturers.
The Finnish company said that the new Asha 310 will come with a full-touch 3-inch display and 2 megapixel camera. The phone allows users to switch between SIM cards and wi-fi to keep down costs.
Nokia plans for the phone to be in stores in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Brazil this quarter at a price of $ 102.
